Marine Spatial Planning (MSP), and how to plan activities from wind farms and oil exploration to subsea cabling, is the subject of a new free publication specifically for seafarers from The Nautical Institute and the World Ocean Council.
Launched earlier this month at the Institute’s branch in Hong Kong, the guide aims to help maritime professionals better understand MSP and take a more active role in representing shipping and navigation issues within the process.

From Paper Charts to ECDIS: order it today
We are delighted to announce the publication of the 2nd edition of our highly acclaimed guide From Paper Charts to ECDIS. Authored by Institute technical manager Captain Harry Gale FNI, the guide sets out everything mariners need to understand in making the transition to electronic charts.
On 1 July 2012 a comprehensive phase-in schedule for the mandatory carriage of ECDIS began and this second edition of the guide recognises that practical guidance on equipment, training and operational practices is now needed urgently. The industry recommendations for ECDIS training and familiarisation are included as appendices.

Achieving good working practices onboard
When onboard working practices are good it’s easy to take them for granted and not analyse why. When they’re not good it may be hard to pinpoint what’s not right until it’s too late. Watch our Alert! video to see how to make working practices work for people rather than the other way round.
Safe operations depend on the reliability and efficiency of people. They need to be involved in design and build, given appropriate training and easy to understand procedures and operating instructions, monitored through appraisals, mentoring and health checks, and enabled to follow a healthy lifestyle.
The NI LinkedIn Group: join the debate
A survey of international seafarers has revealed that a third of all nationalities are “annoyed or frustrated by administrative burdens” in the maritime sector. You’ve probably got views on that and could air them on The Nautical Institute’s LinkedIn Group.

Bridge design: join us on HQS Wellington
Bridge layout standardisation and ergonomics will be the topics for discussion at our free-to-attend London Branch technical meeting on board HQS Wellington on 2nd December. The IMO has identified improved, harmonised and user-friendly bridge design as a priority for the ‘eNav’ implementation plan.
A panel of speakers from the aviation and maritime industries will look into the need for standardisation and how it can be progressed. Questions addressed will include the length of time to get essential information on an unfamiliar bridge and whether this has led to accidents; are ergonomics on new ship’s bridges helping or hindering; and could standardisation be introduced without hampering innovation.
